At least 2 women sexually assaulted every day in posh Delhi localities

At least two women are sexually assaulted every day in posh south Delhi neighbourhoods like Vasant Vihar and Malviya Nagar, latest police data show.
India strengthened its laws to take on violence against women following the brutal gang rape and murder in December 2012 of a 23-year-old physiotherapist on a moving bus in the Capital that sparked street protests and nationwide outrage.
But the crime statistics for this year accessed by HT are alarming and reveal areas falling under Malviya Nagar police as the most dangerous for women with 16 rape cases registered here till May 15. That’s nearly four incidents every month.
Vasant Vihar with 15 cases as well as Vasant Kunj North and Mehrauli with 14 each are marginally behind.
Incidents of molestation are equally rampant in south Delhi. Here, Vasant Vihar surges ahead with 66 cases registered this year, followed by Mehrauli police station at 43.
Two police stations from the southwest district, Dabri and Bindapur, occupy the third and fourth positions with 43 and 37 molestation cases respectively, while the Shakarpur police station from the east district is on the fifth spot.
“The trend shows that women living in such localities are more proactive in reporting these crimes. It also reflects the kind of confidence women have in us,” a Delhi Police official said on condition of anonymity.
A poll published by HT last year on the anniversary of the gang-rape incident said 91% of 2,557 women surveyed did not see any improvements in safety and 86% of respondents avoided going out alone after dark.
The maximum cases of murder and robbery were reported at police stations in northeast Delhi.
With six murder cases each, the Khajoori Khas and New Usmanpur police stations of northeast district jointly occupy the top spot, followed by Shahabad Dairy, Narela and Alipur of outer district at five each.
Robberies were rampant in the northeast district, with Bhajanpura police station reporting 69 cases and Nand Nagri 50.
Prashant Vihar police station from outer district tops the charts in incidents of snatching reported this year with 92 cases. Janakpuri police station from west Delhi comes in second with 81 cases while northeast Delhi’s Bhajanpura ranks third with 76 incidents.
